Being a Leader at the Evolvement Training at APECHS by Saim Iqbal

Hello! I am Saim Iqbal, a senior at Arrowhead Park Early College High School. I am a member of the Evolvement Leadership Team and joined Evolvement to grow as a leader and support tangible change within my community. This year’s training was an exceptional experience because I am now involved in running the training, not just attending it.

The training occurred in the fall and brought new Evolvement members who were just starting off. My role during the training was to present  slides, explain our campaigns, and guide new members through the entire training process, along with two Evolvement staff members. I really enjoyed how high-energy the training was, and how many of the new members actively asked questions and became excited about what we are doing.

One particular moment that stood out was watching them engage in the activities and  increase their confidence as the training progressed. Participating in the presentation had a significant impact on me, I heightened my skills in communication, gained confidence and it  helped me understand the importance of welcoming new members into the program. I gained valuable insight into how the trainings are developed and the degree of teamwork involved in implementing successful training events.

New members to the Evolvement Program will benefit from the training because it will provide them with  supportive, enjoyable, and hands-on experience. Members returning for additional years should continue to stay engaged with Evolvement because every year is an opportunity for growth and leadership development. This experience of helping facilitate the training has reinforced my love for being involved with Evolvement and my desire to continue making a positive difference in the world.

Reflection: Clouds That Hide the Sky by Saim Iqbal

The first time I came across vaping wasn’t in a commercial or health class; it was in the school bathroom. I walked in, and it didn’t smell like soap. It smelled like mango. A sweet cloud hung in the room, and a pack of kids laughed, just like they had been sharing candy. That was […]
